Review [Devil] An interesting if not entirely successful mixing of genres, Tod Browning's The Devil-Doll ends up being more of a hoot than a shiver-fest. Science fiction, horror, revenge drama and sickly sentimentality jostle each other throughout; and unfortunately for genre fans, it is the latter two that finally win out...The Devil-Doll was Tod Browning's penultimate film, and feels like it. After Freaks, Browning was clearly being kept on a short leash: despite the bizarre storyline, the film lacks that feeling of pleasure in the macabre that informed all of Browning's earlier works.

Review [Doctor] This movie features the horror film debuts of both Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray. It was directed by Michael Curtiz and shot in two-strip technicolor, which gives the movie a very unique look. The movie is a lot of fun, and even the somewhat ridiculous "Ssssynthetic Flessssh" sequence works well enough within the context of the film. I wouldn't place it in the very top line of thirties horror movies, but it's a fairly solid entry nonetheless.

Review [Mad] Lorre is in great form as the leering undetected lustful psychopath who has a fondness for attending guillotine beheadings and all 47 performances of the horror play where the beautiful Yvonne, the object of his mad love, is tortured on stage...The film exploits the usual chilling gothic motifs--madness, murder, dismemberment, and forced love, and with a special sense of comic relief, it cuts through its absurd storyline with a witty droll humor as the actors play their parts in mock seriousness and with a special kind of abandonment that makes this a very entertaining film--but even the comical moments can't keep out the chilling effects.

Review [Mark] The cast is great. Bela Lugosi as the sinister Count Mora. Lionel Atwill as the police inspector. Lionel Barrymore as the wise old professor. The three men are perfectly at home in their roles. Count Mora is one of Lugosi's best vamps...Everyone should check this film out. If you've seen it you know what I mean by "twist ending," but if you haven't I don't want to ruin the surprise for you. Mark of the Vampire is a very atmospheric, chilling vampire classic. A must see for all vamp fans and a can't miss for all classic horror fans.

Review [Return] It is quite well directed with resort to German Expressionism. Almost every closeup and medium shot comes underlit, with huge bloated shadows thrown onto blank walls. All the gruesome scenes - Angela's death, the hooking of her up to the blood transfusion - are shown entirely in shadowplay...Bogart's neurotic performance is overdone, although he had an undeniably creepy presence. John Litel predictably proves to be the mad scientist from the moment we see his eccentricity - wearing a monocle and Mephistophelean goatee and pompously philosophizing about the importance of blood - however the film doesn't entirely make him the villain and shows surprising sympathy for him.

Bob Bloom, Journal & Courier [Mask] A classic with a towering performance by Karloff...
Dave Sindelar, Fantastic Movie Musings and Ramblings [Return] ...quite interesting...This one is worth a look.
Matthew M. Foster, Foster on Film [Doctor] The sets are impressive, as is the camera work.
Mike Lorefice, Raging Bull [Devil] far out there it's worth seeing, especially for fans of cult movies.
Richard Scheib, The SF, Horror and Fantasy Film Review [Mark] ...Browning demonstrates more flair for atmosphere here than he did on Dracula...
