Customer Reviews of Hornettek Phantom Network Audio/Video Player - Fast Ethernet
Just hope yours isn't DOA2/15/2011
This poor Review isn't to Bash the product. I mean, I bought it because I want it and I know it's a great media player. Im sure if The product worked I would be giving it all 5's This is just a Heads up about any product from AntOnline. First the product was stuffed loosely into a cardboard box with NO stuffing. (probably why it broke) Also, You are not given any return labels so if your product is DOA or you have to return it to ANTOnline, the return shipping payment is ON YOU. Hopefully the next one I get works or else I will be spending as much on Shipping the product back as I paid for the actual media player
Great (Cheap) Investment11/16/2010
I own the Patriot Box office and was looking to add a second one to our setup so we could watch our DVD collection in multiple rooms. I found this one and noticed that the hornettek was EXACTLY the same as the Patriot. As mentioned in other reviews, it uses the same firmware and I even used the patriot branded wireless dongle without issue. Plays great, easy to setup. The only complaint is the UI, its pretty non intuitive for non tech types, but if you access the location (Shared drive on the network in our case) and leave it there, then other users should have issues finding the media. Great device, REALLY great price. Get at least 1 NOW!
I use it for my daughter to watch movies on 'Movie Day'. All movies are AVI format. 1TB external hard drive connected via USB. It plays all very well. Some AVIs from the digital camera that my DVD player, with USB interface, would not play this one plays The fast forward is very fast. It also remembers where you left off with a video, even after the unit is turned off. GUI is very basic but direct to what is needed. I haven't installed a hard drive yet but plan to. Will update review when I do, if that is an option. Though I haven't used other Media Players, this one does what I want it to. So, I see no need to use any other. Plan to add wireless for networking, will add to review if/when I try it.
This one works so great, much faster than WD HD live media player and much cheaper.
Great value network media player10/21/2010
First of all, the main function of this is to play media files on TV. For that, it works very well with most video file types including H.264 mkv or rmvb files. It can display subtitle with controls on the font size, color, and position. It also remember where you stop playing the video file last time. With network connection, it can stream video from my network drive even wirelessly. This player also can house an internal 2.5" sata hard drive in it. In addition, it has a BitTorrent client and SAMBA server interface built-in. So you can download files directly without a computer. You may also transfer files easily into the internal or external drive over the network. However, it is better to perform this task initiated on the media player. It is a great value with all these function for less than $60. The support from HornetTek is non-existing though. Nevertheless, this player is identical to the earlier release of Patriot Box Office. You may even get firmware update from Patriot's website. The support at Patriot's forum is really excellent. With the latest beta firmware, you may get internet video and radio as well as news and weather feeds directly through the internet.
Great, but you have to be a bit PC-savvy to apprec10/19/2010
Out of the box the thing works pretty good. But once I did some research and discovered this is the exact same hardware as the Patriot Box Office, I was able to find updated Firmware and more information here: http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2131 After getting that (and knowing that they are updating it all the time), now I can FULLY recommend this product. I'm even tempted to get another one for my upstairs TV.
My wife love it10/14/2010
Easy to set up, I add a Hdd and now I can take my movies, music and TV show with me everywhere I go. Very good sound and image quality, easy to read subtitles, and if you name the subtitles the same as the movie or TV show plus _eng or _es, they start automatic. I can have subtitles in different languages, and easy choose between them. I didn't check the BT or UPNP, if it work as advertised this is the perfect gadget to add to your HDTV in replace of your HTPC. The remote control is great.
Great little player for HTPC9/13/2010
I bought this on Buy.com, and had it for nearly a month. I'll say this network video player works great! The unit accepts 2.5" laptop hard drive; I have a WD Scorpio 1TB coming and will be installing that internally, plus a external Toshiba Canvio 1TB. The pros: It's small and compact. The fan is not that noisy; you can still hear it but not anything like having a computer in the living room. I've tried the wireless and it works great. I don't have wireless N, so don't try to stream HD content on a G wireless network, the video will lag and skip!. YouTube videos and HQ videos streams fine. The remote control has all the button to navigate on-screen. The cons: Since it's a small compact unit, the unit can get warm fast, but not hot. The cooling is not adequate since it's small; there's no fan in the rear. In wireless setup, you CAN NOT manually enter hidden SSID. Your wireless SSID has to be enable in order for the wireless to work. Overall, I got rid of my HTPC for this little unit, works great!
Good value for price8/21/2010
Small and solid, can play almost any video format. Video quality is satisfactory. I’m using an external hard drive via USB, have not tried the internal hard disk or wired/wireless configuration. Fan is little bit noisy but can be disconnected. Interface is somewhat slow and has room for improvement.
