The ER doors crashed open and the paramedics powered through. I trotted beside them as they wheeled the patient into Trauma One. (from the first line)

Annotation:
Michael Collins is an orthopedic surgeon who did his residency at the Mayo Clinic. In this memoir of those four years, he writes frankly and convincingly about the constantly alternating horror and exhilaration. As he learns not only to save lives through his increasing skill but to face death as well, Collins provides an often blackly funny behind-the-scenes look at the world of hospital care. He also chronicles--amusingly--his personal life, which was enriched and complicated by the children (an eventual total of 12) he and his wife continued to produce despite the stresses of his residency.

Praise

Publishers Weekly
"Collins describes powerfully how he came to understand that his calling was not just to develop as a skilled surgical technician, but to treat his patients humanely as individuals." 12/06/2004

Kirkus Reviews
"[D]own to earth, fast-paced, and frequently funny....highly animated--and rich in encounters both sad and hilarious." 11/01/2004
