Artist Overview

As the daughter of gospel/R&B singer Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston was literally born to sing. Initially a back-up vocalist and fashion model, Houston leapt to solo stardom with her self-titled debut in 1985. Well into the next decade, she remained one of the most successful pop artists, racking up movie roles (THE BODYGUARD, WAITING TO EXHALE), platinum album sales, and the kind of admiration reserved for the very best in the music industry. The pop diva seemed to weather a rocky marriage to Bobby Brown (whom she ultimately divorced) and a severe drug addiction, but died in a Beverly Hills hotel on the eve of the Grammy Awards in February 2012.
