How will the boy like life among the pirates? Color illustrations accompany the text. While playing at the beach, a young boy is taken in by a band of pirates who request that he use his extraordinary sand shoveling skills to help them bury their treasure. At first the boy loves the freedom of life among the pirates (especially not eating spinach and having no set bedtime). However, he soon discovers that he might, indeed, be a landlubber at heart. Color illustrations accompany the text.
Author Bio
David Shannon
Author and illustrator David Shannon holds a B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design. He has illustrated the works of such authors as Isaac Asimov, Robert D. San Souci, and Jane Yolen. One of Shannon's most popular works is one he both wrote and illustrated--the picture book NO, DAVID. This book was inspired by events from his own rambunctious childhood; in fact, he wrote what was to be the first draft of this book when he was still a child--the text consisting solely of the two words he knew how to spell at the time: "no" and "David."

Praise

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Shannon's illustrations are pure gold: dense, detailed caricatures that affectionately satirize buccaneer fantasy." - Elizabeth Bush January 2004

Bloomsbury Review
"In addition to its appealing story, young readers will be hooked by this book's illustrations: Big, bold, and comically exaggerated, they leap off the pages to make HOW I BECAME A PIRATE a real treasure." - Virginia Nelson May/June 2004
