Excellent Story Supported by Superb Illustrations

by Jennifer on 4/7/2005

As the mother of 5 young boys, I immediately fell in love with this book! Cleverly written from the viewpoint of a small boy, this book incorporates plenty of piratey talk. Although it's hard to imagine that the story could be improved upon, David Shannon did just that with his humorous illustrations. (Dad trapped under the beach umbrella, Jeremy Jacob squashed in amoung sleeping pirates, with a cat's tail pressed against one cheek and a snoring pirate against the other.) This is a book my children want read over and over, and one I love to read every time they ask! Read More

Author Info
David Shannon
Author and illustrator David Shannon holds a B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design. He has illustrated the works of such authors as Isaac Asimov, Robert D. San Souci, and Jane Yolen. One of Shannon's most popular works is one he both wrote and illustrated--the picture book NO, DAVID. This book was inspired by events from his own rambunctious childhood; in fact, he wrote what was to be the first draft of this book when he was still a child--the text consisting solely of the two words he knew how to spell at the time: "no" and "David."
Praise
"Shannon's illustrations are pure gold: dense, detailed caricatures that affectionately satirize buccaneer fantasy."
"In addition to its appealing story, young readers will be hooked by this book's illustrations: Big, bold, and comically exaggerated, they leap off the pages to make HOW I BECAME A PIRATE a real treasure."
From the Publisher
Annotation While playing at the beach, a young boy is taken in by a band of pirates who request that he use his extraordinary sand shoveling skills to help them bury their treasure. How will the boy like life among the pirates? Color illustrations accompany the text.
First Line Pirates have green teeth--when they have any teeth at all. I know about pirates, because one day, when I was at the beach building a sand castle and minding my own business, a pirate ship sailed into view.
Annotation 2 While playing at the beach, a young boy is taken in by a band of pirates who request that he use his extraordinary sand shoveling skills to help them bury their treasure. At first the boy loves the freedom of life among the pirates (especially not eating spinach and having no set bedtime). However, he soon discovers that he might, indeed, be a landlubber at heart. Color illustrations accompany the text.
