change of heart1/27/2009
I wrote the original review for this product after only a couple days of use. Since that time, I have had hours online with the HP support chat line mainly working out software application issues. As with most HP s/w it is WAY overcomplicated to install and its usability is virtually useless. HP gets it webbed tentacles into virtually everything on your PC. It prevented my PC from hibernating and corrupted all the restore points in XP among other things. (and my PC is a Compaq made by HP!!) With the printer left idle for any length of time the USB controller disconnects the device and one must reboot EVERY time you want to print. In the end I uninstalled everything and let XP search for and install the drivers and .dll files. I then aborted the remaining HP software solutions application. Basically it now functions primarily as a printer with the fax, copy and scan functions done offline from the Officejet front panel. I have an HP digital camera which also came with software that was impossible to use and caused many other problems on my system. I think I'm done with HP.
I needed a compact all-in-one and, at this price, there isn't much competition. I've only had it for a couple days but so far, so good. I had a little difficulty installing the software as the instruction said to run the s/w CD first and then plug in the USB cable after. That didn't work. Unless you plug in the printer first XP won't locate some critical hardware DLL files needed to install the various applications later on in the process. The software load took an extraordinarily long time. I think it connects to the HP web site. The telephone handset is a nice feature. Now I can move my cordless phone to another location in the house.
