Whitley Strieber
Initially known for his horror novels, Whitley Strieber achieved notoriety in the late '80s as a self-styled expert on UFOs. Born Louis Whitley Strieber, he attended the University of Texas, graduating with a B.A. in 1968. After graduation, he moved to New York and took a job in advertising. On November 20, 1970, he married Anne Mattocks. After nine years, Strieber left the world of advertising and published his first novel, THE WOLFEN, in 1978. This was followed in 1981 by THE HUNGER. Both of these novels were made into films, with the latter--starring Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon, and David Bowie--becoming a huge cult favorite. Following another horror novel, Strieber, with James Kunetka, co-wrote the highly regarded WARDAY, a "nonfictional" account of a trip across the United States beginning the day after a limited nuclear attack has decimated the country. In 1987, Strieber announced that on December 26th of the previous year, he had been abducted by aliens. "Recovering" additional memories through hypnosis, Strieber wrote about his experiences in COMMUNION, a book which made Strieber a frequent talk-show guest and brought him considerable fame. Strieber continued to write fiction, moving away from horror and towards science fiction in novels like MAJESTIC and UNHOLY FIRE, but never really found an sf readership. He devoted large amounts of time to UFO research, compiling the perceived abduction experiences of others into books--several co-edited with his wife, Anne--and into an active website that acts as something of a clearing house for UFO information to the Internet community. He claims that the abductions, which began in his childhood, have continued into the late-1990s. Strieber even created a television special that purported to show, among other things, actual footage of an alien implant being removed from his head. He continues to be a fixture on the talk-show circuit as the millennium approaches.
