Formed by the Stereolab bassist Simon Johns in 1999, the U.K. band Imitation Electric Piano spent some time as a purely instrumental outfit before eventually incorporating vocals. Heavy on vintage synth sounds and unconventional time signatures, this 2001 CD EP release displays distinct prog rock influences, notably of the 1960s and '70s art-rock band Soft Machine, on a collection of instrumental tracks that includes the appropriately named "Progressive Rock," the Tortoise-like "(A Drunken Lunge Through) Deep Rice Pudding" and the jazzy "The Sidecar Register." |
