Editor's Note
A brave young stonemason assembles a fierce band of warriors to prevent an evil king from acquiring the artifact that will permit him to rule the world in this epic mythological fantasy from visionary filmmaker Tarsem Singh. King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) is a brutal tyrant on a bloody mission to seek out the mythical Bow of Epirus. Should he succeed, even the gods of Olympus will be forced to bow before him. In his efforts to locate the invincible and elusive weapon, Hyperion leads his Heraklion army on a brutal rampage across Greece, razing every town in their path, and killing with impunity. When the Hyperions lay waste to his village and cut down his mother in cold blood, vengeful stonemason Theseus (Henry Cavill) emerges from the rubble determined to make the king pay for his crimes. Later, the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), experiences a vision of Theseus' future that convinces her he will play a pivotal role in defeating King Hyperion. Armed with that supernatural knowledge, she agrees to help Theseus assemble a small army capable of defeating the tyrannical king and preventing him from enslaving the entire human race. Stephen Dorff, Kellan Lutz, and John Hurt co-star.

| For director Tarsem Singh, looks are everything. Everything. A movie may have a lousy screenplay and ineffectual characters, but as long as the costumes are immaculate and the production design divine, all is right in the cinematic world. While it wants you to think it's as macho as 300 and filled with as much mythology as Clash of the Titans, Immortals is actually a 100 minute resume reel for one of film's most misguided auteurs. From The Cell to The Fall, Tarsem has avoided the majority of the medium's mandates in order to deliver eye popping visuals and MTV level spectacle...but little else. This take on tale of Theseus, King Hyperion, and the battle between the Gods of Olympus and the long exiled Titans is no different. It has more than enough material for the director to free association on. All the stuff in the middle however, is mindless mediocrity....read the full review | |

| Every so often, some conceited soul who fancies his or herself (though usually his) a filmmaker whips up a bloated, boring, harebrained sword and sandal spectacle that succeeds in employing a heap of computer graphics majors and actors fraught with a dwindling bank account. In 2000, it was Ridley Scott’s Gladiator — a movie that somehow became a hit. In 2006, 300 introduced moviegoers to the lush, vast plains of CGI-dom and the barely coherent screaming of Gerard Butler. There was also that stupid, unnecessary Clash of the Titans remake that made the original look like a classic....read the full review | |
