Editors Note
Note This riotous throwback to the slapstick comedy of the vaudeville era is inventively written, directed, co-produced, and performed by Stanley Tucci (BIG NIGHT). He and Oliver Platt play acting partners just trying to catch a break. Down on their luck, they end up as accidental stowaways on an ocean liner. Trapped on the ship, they get involved in hilarious antic after hilarious antic, helped by a fabulous supporting cast including Tony Shalhoub, Lili Taylor, Isabella Rossellini, and the nearly unrecognizable Alfred Molina and Campbell Scott. Reminiscent of MONKEY BUSINESS as well as early Woody Allen (the Woodman actually makes an uncredited appearance in THE IMPOSTORS), the film is a wild romp, expertly put together by Tucci.
Sight and Sound "...An elegantly designed title sequence....Steve Buscemi's catatonic warbling of 'The Nearness of You' is also worth catching..." 01/??/1999 p.48
Movieline's Hollywood Life "...Tasty....An excellent supporting cast..."| 06/01/1999 p.92
USA Today "...A pleasure, the film is a remarkable showcase for a dozen or so acting staples of contemporary independent cinema..." -- 3 out of 4 stars 10/23/1998 p.6E
Premiere "...[An] eager, fast-paced production....Clever fun..." 10/01/1998 p.30
Los Angeles Times "...Tucci and Platt both reveal strong deadpan comedy sensibilities..." 10/02/1998 p.C19

Review ...The Impostors is an amusing diversion-almost always fast, usually funny, good-natured and unpretentious... [Stanley Tucci and Oliver Platt] make a fine latter-day Laurel and Hardy.

Review There are laughs, but they are quiet chuckles. I found myself smiling a lot. I felt fond of the characters... There are movies that work, and then movies like The Impostors that don't really work but are pleasant all the same. There was nothing I actively disliked out the film, but my affection was more polite than impassioned. If this had been a first draft, I would have advised throwing some characters overboard and turning up the heat under the others.

Review More than a dozen of New York's finest actors ham it up with such unrestrained glee in Stanley Tucci's period farce The Impostors that it hardly matters if this swirl of cotton candy disappears even before it touches the tip of your tongue. Playing out-of-work actors posing as stewards on a 1930s cruise ship packed with caricatures of bogus aristocrats and hissable villains, Tucci and Oliver Platt evoke everyone from Laurel and Hardy to the Marx Brothers as they skid from one absurd scrape to the next. ... the comic chemistry of Tucci's nervous, wiry Arthur and Platt's portly, befuddled Maurice, who eventually dons a gown and Shirley Temple wig to evoke the Charlie's Aunt era of movie drag, is sound. For a movie like The Impostors to succeed, you don't need much scintillating dialogue. All you have to do is know how to look hopelessly inept as stacks of luggage tumble from your grasp in a landslide of flying suitcases and flailing limbs, leaving all pretenses to grace and dignity forever shattered.
