Product Overview

IN HER SHOES: In this screen adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's bestselling novel, Toni Collette (MURIEL'S WEDDING) is Rose Feller, an overweight, overworked, and painfully undersexed lawyer who fills an emotional void with pints of Haagen-Dazs and a closetful of expensive shoes that she never wears. Little sis Maggie (an always radiant Cameron Diaz), who is prone to public drunkenness, one-night stands, and wearing lingerie as outerwear, is as lacking in career prospects as her sister is in romantic ones. When her irresponsible behavior gets her kicked out of her father's house by her spiteful stepmother, Maggie has nowhere to crash but her elder sister's couch. But, after she ignites a series of disasters ranging from the minor to the catastrophic, Maggie is cast out by her angry older sibling, with no job, no money, and no one to take her in. She finds a stash of hidden letters in her father's desk drawer that enable her to track down her estranged grandmother (the wonderfully centered Shirley MacLaine) in a Florida retirement community, hoping to use her impressive skills of manipulation and false charm to financial benefit. While Maggie begins to adapt to life as a nubile young fish in the waters of shuffleboard and wheelchairs, Rose, up in the wintry north, quits her stifling job and begins her own personal transformation. Both women's paths to spiritual growth and self-actualization might ring false if handled by less nuanced performers and a flashier director, but here they are subtle enough to be both inspiring and realistic. Director Curtis Hanson has proven to be a flexible artist, jumping from genre to genre with the prowess and confidence of those studio directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. With IN HER SHOES, the man behind L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and 8 MILE elevates the "chick flick" out of that pigeonhole, crafting a story of surprising depth and universal appeal.

Review Some movies are simply made for women, and heterosexual men have no hope of appreciating them, I suppose. Do you like shoes? False sentimentality? Something that mistakes generalizations for insight? Then In Her Shoes is the film for you. Curtis Hanson's slack follow-up to his rapper hero-worship outing, 8 Mile, is a disappointing look at sisterhood based on the chick novel by Jennifer Weiner. A frequently saccharine and false motion picture, In Her Shoes wants to elicit tears it never earns and tie everything together into a tidy bundle that leaves no cliche untouched. Artificial in both its dialogue and its construction, the film only works - on those occasions when it works - because of the sincere performance by the underrated Toni Collette.

Review Curtis Hanson's "In Her Shoes" takes a good half hour to make it clear it will not be a soppy chick flick, and for that matter what is "chick flick" anyway but an insulting term for a movie that is about women instead of the usual testosterone carriers? The movie's set-up would be right at home in a sitcom, but its next 99 minutes do some rather unexpected things with characters who insist on breaking out of the stereotypes they started with. It's not every big-budget movie that gets its two biggest emotional payoffs with poems by Elizabeth Bishop and e.e. cummings...Here are the opening stereotypes: Maggie Feller (Cameron Diaz) is a blond bimbo who gets drunk at her high school reunion, has sex in the toilet and passes out. Her sister Rose (Toni Collette) is a plain-Jane Philadelphia lawyer who is 15 pounds on the wrong side of her Weight Watchers target goal. Their mother is dead, and their father Michael (Ken Howard) lives with his new wife Sydelle (Candice Azzara)..."In Her Shoes" starts out with the materials of an ordinary movie and becomes a rather special one. The emotional payoff at the end is earned, not because we see it coming as the inevitable outcome of the plot, but because it arrives out of the blue and yet, once we think about it, makes perfect sense. It tells us something fundamental and important about a character, it allows her to share that something with those she loves, and it does it in a way we could not possibly anticipate. Like a good poem, it blindsides us with the turn it takes right at the end...This movie by Curtis Hanson comes after "L.A. Confidential" (1997), "Wonder Boys" (2000) and "8 Mile" (2002) with Eminem. Three completely different movies, you'd think, and yet all bound by a common thread, the transformative power of the written word. The first is about gossip journalism, the second about writers on a campus, the third about a hip-hop poet. Now a life is changed by reading.

Artificial in both its dialogue and its construction, the film only works - on those occasions when it works - because of the sincere performance by the underrated Toni Collette...Hanson is a notoriously uneven filmmaker who is capable of reaching amazing heights and plunging to depressing depths. The auteur who dazzled us with L.A. Confidential and Wonder Boys is missing in action. Even the director of the less edgy but nevertheless respectable 8 Mile is nowhere to be found. Instead, we have a screenplay and result more in line with something to come out of Garry Marshall or Nancy Meyers' workshop...The screenplay is a plot-by-number production that feels like a cross between a Lifetime made-for-TV movie and an episode of The Golden Girls. On the acting front, in addition to the wonderful Toni Collette, there's Cameron Diaz doing a convincing job as a spoiled brat (one hopes she's acting...), and Shirley MacLaine playing the same role she always plays these days. Collette steals the movie when she's around, but she doesn't have quite enough screen time to save the proceedings. It has life when she's on screen but becomes inert when she's not around. And some of the scenes in Florida reek of the "aren't old people cute?" formula. At 130 minutes, In Her Shoes is too long for the slight material.

Quotes
HollywoodReporter.com The actors are all on their game, especially the three stars, and Hanson never lets the movie bog down in sentimentality.
Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald ...its tenderness is genuine, and the movie's affection for its characters is awfully contagious.
Maitland McDonagh, TV Guide ...wonderfully satisfying: Collette, MacLaine and Diaz are exceptional, and the mix of humor and heartbreak is perfectly calibrated.
Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle Maintains a breezy charm throughout and contains many extremely funny sequences.
Pam Grady, Reel.com ...an entrancing tale of family ties that both smother and bind...a "chick flick" in the best sense of the phrase.
