Scott Turow
Scott Turow is one of the most prominent and influential writers in the genre of legal thrillers. A very successful lawyer, he has maintained a career as an attorney while writing roughly one book every three years. Many of his books have topped bestsellers lists, including his 1987 debut novel, PRESUMED INNOCENT, and the much anticipated sequel published in 2010, INNOCENT. Other popular novels include PERSONAL INJURIES and BURDEN OF PROOF, which was adapted as a television mini series. He has also published several works of non-fiction, including ONE L, his first-hand account of the notoriously terrible first year of law school, as well as short pieces for magazines and newspapers.||Born in Chicago, Turow graduated from Amherst College before moving to the west coast to study creative writing at Stanford University. A few years after finishing at Stanford, Turow enrolled in Harvard Law School, graduating in 1978 and going to work as an Assistant United States Attorney in Chicago. A partner at a Chicago firm, Turow balances his legal and writing careers with charitable and pro bono work, such as serving on boards and playing in a for-charity rock band with other writers. His writing has received critical acclaim--including the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award and Time Magazine's Best Work of Fiction award. Turow married the painter Annette Weisberg in 1971, has three children, and lives near Chicago.
Praise
"Mesmerizing prose and intricate plotting lift Turow's superlative legal thriller....Once again, Turow displays an uncanny ability for making the passions and contradictions of his main characters accessible and understandable." (starred review)
"Turow is as agile as ever...."
"Cutting back and forth in time and among characters' points of view, Mr. Turow constructs two story lines that dovetail with implacable momentum....Mr. Turow... [uses] his easy familiarity with the legal world to provide a behind-the-scenes look at how that realm operates day to day--from the stratagems employed by prosecutors and defense attorneys to orchestrate evidence to the random, lucky or unlucky events that may shape the outcome of a trial."
"There are enough surprises in all this to keep the reader's attention fixed -- Turow has always been very good at that -- but as usual in his fiction there's more than skillful legal drama. Turow is a serious man who has thought long and carefully about the law. He understands that in the end it is not really much better than any other mechanism at uncovering absolute truth; that the courtroom is a roll of the dice....All of which makes for an intelligent, thoughtful novel: a grownup book for grownup readers."
"The writing is elegant, the characters lived-in, and the legal and trial details expertly rendered. It's the suspense, though, that will keep you reading."
From the Publisher
Annotation Thirteen years after publishing the seminal legal thriller PRESUMED INNOCENT, Scott Turow gives readers the second chapter in Rusty Sabich's story. Over twenty years have passed since the events of PRESUMED, but like a sinister episode of déjà vu, circumstances seem to be repeating themselves. Rusty is now the county's chief appellate judge, but that does not put him above the law. When his wife unexpectedly dies in her sleep, prosecutor Tommy Molto--who unsuccessfully led the case against Rusty years before when he was accused of killing his mistress--immediately suspects the judge. And so the battle of legal wits is on. Mixing things up a bit, Turow tells the first part of the story from both lawyers' perspectives, but the second half is classic Turow: passionate and smart, nail-biting courtroom scenes that will leave fans thrilled by his resurrection of these characters. Selected by Publishers Weekly as a 2010 Top 100 Book.
