I've only had it for a few weeks but it is quiet. I bought it mainly for the firewire 800 feature. it fits perfectly under a MacMini. So far it has always started up as my TimeMachine back up where other drives didn't and many times I would have to reselt them.
Without burning a hole in the pocket this serves as a decent desktop external hd with fw 800 interface. Today, the best of external hard drives are either chunky or have interface recognition issues on set up. There has been no problem with this device. In the last couple of years it had been doing great and the warranty has also been good compared to industry standards.
