It works just fine...3/23/2012
This is a dream. A one-time-only downside was reconfiguring from RAID 5 with one hot spare to RAID 6 without a hot spare. It took two weeks to rebuild, because I didn't turn off all of the unneeded services. Not sure what JT2 bought for hard drives, but I did buy six of the recommended Hitachi 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 2TB drives. Other hitches in the giddy-up were: 1. using Port 443 until we sent our email off our server and up to the cloud and 2. getting rid of the secure cert error - finally, on one login, I was able to download a good cert. Other than that, no problems and it's loaded with apps. No brainer.
Great NAS...if/when it works.9/3/2011
I purchased this NAS and found that it had a very easy-to-use web-based GUI with lots of great specs and features on paper. The problem came when I tried to install hard drives and create a storage pool. I went through several different types of Hard Drives (including those "certified" by Iomega to work) and NONE of them would let me create a RAID array. I was also getting unspecified "Error" prompts at nearly everything I tried to do. Spent 4 days on the phone with level 3 tech support to find all they could do was blame the 4 drives I had and the 12 they had me purchase to resolve the issue. ROYAL PAIN IN THE BUTT. I'm returning the device for a refund. Check out the Synology DS1511+.
