The film, which stars Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, and Rosie Perez, is actually – according to the box – "inspired by a true story." In the filmic version of the story a police officer, Charlie Lang (Cage), buys a lotto ticket for his wife, Muriel (Perez), but promises half of the potential winnings to a waitress (Fonda) when he doesn't have the tip on a two dollar bill. The ticket comes up as a four million dollar winner, Lang makes good on his promise, and Muriel winds up hating her husband. Before you feel too bad for Charlie, remember that this is a romantic comedy and that Muriel is played by Rosie Perez with all the obnoxious whine in her voice that she can muster....read the full review

Plot Summary
When he digs into his pocket to get a tip for coffee shop waitress Yvonne Biasi, New York policeman Charlie Lang discovers that he's out of cash. So, as compensation, he promises that, if lady luck is on his side and a recently purchased lottery ticket wins, he'll give her half the money. Lo and behold, his ticket's that special one, and Lang splits the $4 million with Biasi -- to the chagrin of his materialistic wife.| But Charlie also discovers in the process that there's more to life than money... and that some of the best things in life are free.

Memorable Quotes

"I made a promise and I kept it. Most people would have done the same." ---- Charlie Lang (Nicolas Cage)

"Do you love me? Then stiff her." ---- Muriel Lang (Rosie Perez)

"If only rich people have kids we wouldn't have public schools." ---- Charlie Lang (Nicolas Cage)
