The New Cars Rock!

by Cars fan on 6/5/2006

The blending of The Cars' remaining members with Todd Rundgren / Kasim Sulton of Utopia plus Prairie Prince (The Tubes) is a great mix! A hard rocking CD and show. It's too bad Ric Ocasek didn't want to rejoin the band but the resulting New Cars isn't lacking a thing. I only wish the New Cars will write more new songs -- if the amazing "Not Tonight" is any indication, they can keep the Cars "sound" intact yet still make it fresh and fun. Todd Rundgren certainly has the capability to study a band's music and come up with new, great songs that could have been penned by the band in question (witness the Utopia "Deface the Music" album, which is a Beatles style album). Get "It's Alive!" -- you'll be happy you did.

New Cars are ALIVE!

by JKH on 6/6/2006

The New Cars It's Alive is nearly flawless. From the playful introduction of "Just What I Needed" to the hard-charging new sound of "Shake it Up" this album takes the material of the old Cars and updates it with a rougher, harder-edged sound to the delight of this long-time but skeptical Cars fan. Much of Ric Ocasek's fluff is gone, replaced largely by big guitar riffs, but the core center of good pop as written by Ocasek remains. Kasim Sulton does a solid job of filling in for Ben Orr and given his place as one of the premier bass players in the game today the bass playing on these songs has never sounded better. But it is the three new compositions at the end of the album that really show just how good this band can be. "Not Tonight" is clearly as good as any of the hit Cars tunes and once again has a slightly harder edge to it. Unlike all the other songs on this album, "Not Tonight" sounds like a "NEW CARS" song. You do not find yourself comparing or contrasting it, but rather it sounds as it should. Which is VERY good. "Warm" is a ballad from Kasim more in the mold of "Baby why Can't I have you" featuring great synth sound from Greg Hawkes and again it sounds like a "NEW CARS' song. Finally, "More" is done as kind of a Ben Orr tribute, from my reading of it, with Todd Rundgren taking Orr's famous attitude-singing from the Cando-O era and really rocking away. Once again, it is a fantastic tune. Any complaints from me? A couple. First of all, I wish this had all been done in the studio. Live albums are never as good as their studio counterparts. But this one is doggone close. Very close. Finally, I, for one, wish this album had been of ALL new New CARS songs. Obviously, these guys can rock on their own. Still, these are ALL MINOR complaints. If you want to hear a great album with eighteen tunes, with all the old songs re-imagined in a very good way and 3 very good new tunes, then It's Alive! is the album for you. If you want to hear some of the best guitar playing today, featuring a virtuoso performance by Rundgren the the great Elliot Easton, then It's Alive! is for you. For my money, the new single "Not Tonight" is worth the price of the album itself.
