Anyone that knows anything about Leyendecker's masterpieces knows that many artists have attempted to copy his unique style of painting. I have never seen a good really good copy of a Leyendecker painting, the ones in the Cutler book are pretty competent but there are those ever present signs of missing and incorrect elements. In art school I met an artist that was talented and could create Leyendecker copies that were 95% correct. His abilities to re-create the almost correct brushstrokes were amazing. The Leyendecker strokes cannot be duplicated exactly and this helps savvy buyers, collectors and historians identify the phony knock offs. Laurence and Judy Cutler may not have made the final selections for the Leyendecker book. Many times the publishers have the final say. This does not explain how these fake or counterfeit forgeries ever got into the publisher's or printer's hands. Mistakes sometimes happen and some mishaps certainly occurred with this new Leyendecker book. I am more bothered by the errors and editorial liberties taken by the authors. Much of the writing was totally fabricated and expanded for sheer entertainment value - especially passages regarding Charles Beach. Doesn't anyone have an accurate photo of Charles Beach? But enjoy the book for what it is. That's what I am doing and I welcome it into my library, mistakes and all. Overall Rating - Two Stars**
