More than a quarter of a century after "The Sword of Shannara carved out its place in the pantheon of great epic fantasy, the magic of Terry Brooks's "New York Times bestselling saga burns as brightly as ever. Three complete series have chronicled the ever-unfolding history of Shannara. But more stories are still to be told--and new adventures have yet to be undertaken. Book One of High Druid of Shannara invites both the faithful longtime reader and the curious newcomer to take the first step on the next extraordinary quest.
Twenty years have passed since Grianne Ohmsford denounced her former life as the dreaded Ilse Witch--saved by the love of her brother, the magic of the Sword of Shannara, and the destruction of her evil mentor, the Morgawr. Now, fulfilling the destiny predicted for her, she has established the Third Druid Council, and dedicated herself to its goals of peace, harmony among the races, and defense of the Four Lands. But the political intrigue, secret treachery, and sinister deeds that have haunted Druid history for generations continue to thrive. And despite her devotion to the greater good as Ard Rhys--the High Druid of Paranor, Grianne still has bitter enemies.
Among the highest ranks of the Council she leads lurk those who cannot forget her reign of terror as the Ilse Witch, who covet her seat of power, and who will stop at nothing to see her deposed . . . or destroyed. Even Grianne's few allies--chief among them her trusted servant Tagwen--know of the plots against her. But they could never anticipate the sudden, ominous disappearance of the Ard Rhys, in the dead of night and without a trace. Now, barely a step ahead of the dark forces bent on stopping him, Tagwen joins Grianne's brave young nephew, Pen Ohmsford, and the wise, powerful elf Ahren Elessedil on a desperate and dangerous mission of search and rescue--to deliver the High Druid of Shannara from an unspeakable fate.
Expect no end of wonders, no shortage of adventure, exhilaration, suspense, and enchantment, as Terry Brooks demonstrates, once again, that there is no end to his magic of invention and mastery of storytelling.

Annotation:
This high fantasy kicks off a new trilogy within the long-running and ever-popular Shannara series. Despite the passage of 20 years, Grianne Ohmsford, the Ard Rhys, or High Druid, of Paranor, still struggles to put her dark past--the days when she was the sinister Ilse Witch--behind her. Many refuse to accept her redemption, blaming her for the actions of her former self and suspecting that she has not entirely turned away from evil. One faction has chosen to act on those suspicions, abducting Grianne and imprisoning her in the demon-inhabited dimension known as the Forbidding. Unfortunately for Grianne, she must put her rescue in the hands of two youths entirely unprepared for heroic deeds: her woefully unmagical nephew, Pendarrin Ohmsford, and the impetuous elf princess Khyber Elessedil.
Author Bio
Terry Brooks
Terry Brooks describes himself as "an adventure writer with fantasy trappings." His first novel, THE SWORD OF SHANNARA, became the first work of fiction to top the New York Times Trade Paperback bestseller list. Brooks began writing in high school, influenced primarily by Alexander Dumas and J. R. R. Tolkein, both of whom would remain important to his subsequent writing. He received an undergraduate degree in English in 1966 from Hamilton College and studied law at Washington and Lee University. After graduating, Brooks joined a family law practice and married Barbara O'Banion in 1972. The couple eventually had two children. In 1977, Brooks published THE SWORD OF SHANNARA, a fantasy epic modeled on Tolkein's THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The book became a best seller, remaining at the top of the charts for five months. It was followed by two sequels, THE ELFSTONES OF SHANNARA (1980) and THE WISHSONG OF SHANNARA (1985), which were also very successful. The next year, Brooks published MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE--SOLD!, a humorous fantasy novel about a depressed lawyer who purchases a used magic kingdom through a catalog. While on a promotional tour for that book, he met Judine Alba, a bookstore manager. He divorced O'Banion, and married Alba six months later. 1986 was also the year that he stopped practicing law to become a full-time writer. Though MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE--SOLD! was not quite as well-received as the Shannara trilogy, Brooks wrote several sequels to it before returning, in 1990, to his original series. THE SCIONS OF SHANNARA, the first of the Heritage of Shannara series, exploring the prehistory of the first trilogy. Four sequels later, Brooks wrote two more books in the Magic Kingdom series, before moving on to other realms. RUNNING WITH THE DEMON (1997) was a break from the straightforward fantasy of his previous books--it was set in the contemporary word--and, though the change cost him some longtime fans, it widened his readership considerably. His next books, STRANGE DELIVERANCE (also 1997) and KNIGHT OF THE WORD (1998), continued this move away from fantasy settings, while keeping the magical and supernatural elements from his earlier work. A consistently best-selling author, his writing is moving onto ground occupied by Dean Koontz and Stephen King, and with his already-huge fan base, Brooks has become a major contender to their thrones--and in 1999, Brooks's novelization of the eagerly awaited STAR WARS EPISODE ONE: THE PHANTOM MENACE, guarantees that his name will appear on the bookshelves of even more people.

Publishers Weekly
"[A] satisfactory conclusion to...[the] trilogy....[Brooks's] characterization has grown substantially more sophisticated over the years, and both his optimism about the triumph of virtue and his avoidance of graphic sex and slaughter make this series an excellent starting place for younger readers to explore high fantasy." 07/18/2005

Kirkus Reviews
"[A] fine...finish to this trilogy." 07/01/2005
