Author Bio
Peter Benchley
Born into a family with several prominent writers, Peter Benchley is the grandson of drama critic and humorist Robert Benchley and the son of novelist Nathaniel Benchley. Deciding early on to follow in their footsteps, Benchley worked as a journalist at several publications before becoming Lyndon Johnson's presidential speechwriter in 1967. It was not until 1974 that he found his true calling, when he published his debut novel, JAWS. The book became a New York Times bestseller almost immediately, and remained one for more than three years, making it the most successful debut novel ever written up until that time. The film version, based on a script co-written by Benchley (who had a walk-on scene in the film), became one of the highest grossing films of all-time. His subsequent novels, though not quite as popular as JAWS, have all done reasonably well, with most being filmed in one form or another. Benchley devotes much of his spare time to speaking and writing about the importance of environmental responsibility and preserving the oceans and seas.

Deciding early on to follow in their footsteps, Benchley worked as a journalist at several publications before becoming Lyndon Johnson's presidential speechwriter in 1967. It was not until 1971 that he found his true calling, when he turned his fascination with sharks into his debut novel, JAWS. Published in 1974, the book became a New York Times bestseller almost immediately, and remained one for more than three years, making it the most successful debut novel ever written up until that time. The film version, based on a script co-written by Benchley (who had a walk-on scene in the film), became one of the highest grossing films of all-time. Several of his subsequent novels, which included THE DEEP, THE ISLAND, and BEAST, also invoked the sea. Though not quite as popular as JAWS, they all did reasonably well, with most being filmed in one form or another. Benchley devoted much of his spare time to speaking and writing about the importance of environmental responsibility and preserving the oceans and seas. He died on February 12, 2006, of pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease.
