Editor's Note
THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT: Mansfield's first starring role is as the outrageously voluptuous but tone-deaf girlfriend of a retired racketeer. He hires a talent agent to transform her into a movie star and they fall in love. High-voltage, candy-colored camp, by comic maven Tashlin, which features some great early rock-and-roll performances from the Platters, Little Richard, and Fats Domino.

WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER?: This adaptation of George Axelrod's successful Broadway play takes satiric aim at the television industry with its tale of an ad copywriter who gets in over his head while trying to save the "Stay-Put Lipstick" account. The glamorous star he wants to endorse the product will only agree if he helps her make her boyfriend jealous.

THE SHERIFF OF FRACTURED JAW: Englishman Jonathan Tibbs (Kenneth More) travels to the unruly Old West town of Fractured Jaw, attempting to expand the fortunes of his uncle's company. By a series of mishaps he becomes an accidental hero, and the townspeople make him their sheriff. Jayne Mansfield plays the saloon girl, Kate, who provides counsel for the unwitting authority.

The Films of Raoul Walsh 9 of 10
[Sheriff] This film is full of personal Walsh traditions. The rowdy saloon and dance hall has appeared many times in Walsh's work, going all the back to Regeneration (1915). This saloon, with all its comic fighting and comically exaggerated characters, is part of a forty year tradition in Walsh. In many ways, the two-bit town here is the Western equivalent of the Bowery setting that has recurred so many times in Walsh's work...The heroine is a sexy woman who relates well in a man's world, also a Walsh tradition. Like many of Walsh's heroines, she is a good natured pal to men, but also a woman of great respectability, one who knows how to draw the line against offensive behavior.

Austin Chronicle 9 of 10
[Girl] Starting out as a cartoon director at Warner Bros., Tashlin's later live action films bristled with the imagination of an animator. This larger-than-life Mad magazine-esqe satire on Fifties popular culture practically spills off the screen. Bursting with vivid colors, this is a Hollywood rock & roll musical in Technicolor, Cinemascope, and stereophonic sound...An impressive array of great rock acts are featured in the film, and their performances really rip...Tashlin just didn't get rock & roll, but it didn't stop him from making a great rock & roll movie. - Louis Black
