	Pianist Chuck Marohnic, tubaist Sam Pilafian, and trumpeter Greg Hopkins lead a nonet reminiscent of Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool recordings from the late 1940s and early 1950s. Finely tuned and arranged with a careful ear, this recording collects several period pieces and three originals by Hopkins and one by Marohnic. True to the style of early Miles, the band carefully re-creates a mood without devolving to repertory. While a few of the pieces use the classic, original arrangements (from Gil Evans and Johnny Carisi), the others mostly reflect the respectful and tasteful pen of Hopkins, who admirably re-creates a feel, without shackling himself to the past. Hopkins proves himself a fine soloist, as do the other members of the nonet, including tuba virtuoso Sam Pilafian. ~ Steven A. Loewy
