Part conspiracy thriller, part comic horror, Steven Moffat's extraordinary retelling of this Robert Louis Stevenson classic takes the ultimate tale of inner conflict to unforgettable new heights.

It is 2007 and there's a new Dr. Jekyll with an old problem - Mr. Hyde. But the pair have a deal - a body share - and an impossible life is somehow lived. With all the resources of modern technology, and the best surveillance hardware, Jekyll is determined to keep his dangerous alter ego in check by doing a deal with his own devil. What neither of them know is that an ancient organization with limitless wealth and power is monitoring their every move, and a plan over a century in the making is coming to fruition. The return of Dr Jekyll is no accident...

"...a psychological horror, a conspiracy thriller, a love story and a dark comedy.  James Jackson, The Times
"Sexy, violent, and loads of fun, Jekyll brings the old creaky classic novel into the modern age...  Brett Cullum, DVD Verdict
"...intrigue worthy of "The X-Files"...Moffat has maintained the underlying integrity while establishing his own surrounding mythology...  Brian Lowry, Variety
" endlessly engaging, perfectly compact thriller, and its presentation here is equally excellent...  David Cornelius, DVD Talk
"...goofy and cheesy in the most deliciously pulpy way, this is TV of a caliber that we rarely get to enjoy on American television...  MaryAnn Johanson, The Flick Filosopher

Editor's Note
Robert Louis Stevenson's DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE is interpreted in a unique way in this 2007 production. Dr. Jekyll is plagued by the familiar problem of his destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. So Jekyll takes advantage of some modern technology in an attempt to thwart the beast, using surveillance cameras to monitor his activities. But a further twist in the tale comes when it emerges that it's not just Jekyll who is doing the monitoring....

Professional Reviews

Variety 8 of 10
Shrewdly contemporizing the oft-told tale of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," BBC America infuses some clever 21st-century wrinkles into the story -- starting with the split personalities using a Dictaphone to swap notes over minutia like where they left the car. Forgoing makeup beyond minor cosmetics, James Nesbitt portrays the original transformer with deft use of posture and evil expressions, while writer Steven Moffat has layered on intrigue worthy of "The X-Files"...Moffat and the premiere's director, Douglas Mackinnon, set the tone immediately, as Tom Jackman (Nesbitt) warns a psychiatric nurse ("The Bionic Woman's" Michelle Ryan) about the terms of this strange relationship -- how his alter ego knows not to cross certain boundaries of civility lest Jackman turn him in, while Hyde has threatened suicide if Jackman even considers seeking a cure...Always a morality tale about the nature of good and evil, the story of Jekyll and Hyde hardly cried out for re-imagining, and the prospect initially provoked some trepidation. Yet once the wheels begin churning, it's clear Moffat has maintained the underlying integrity while establishing his own surrounding mythology -- a strange case of tinkering with a classic, wonder of wonders, without screwing it up. - Brian Lowry
