DESCRIPTION Set in the Mississippi backroads, this unflinchingly realistic novel focuses on the relationship between Gary Jones, the 15-year-old son of dissolute itinerant laborers and Joe Ransom, a hard-drinking ex-con who becomes his unlikely savior.
From the Publisher:
The lives of two men--Joe Ransom, a drinking, reckless fifty-year-old gambler, and Gary Jones, a luckless fifteen-year-old boy raised by an evil father and an insane mother--become intertwined in a novel of good, evil, temptation, and sacrifice. Reprint. The lives of two men--Joe Ransom, a drinking, reckless fifty-year-old gambler, and Gary Jones, a luckless fifteen-year-old boy raised by an evil father and an insane mother--become intertwined in a novel of good, evil, temptation, and sacrifice. Reprint.Nearing fifty, Joe Ransom won't slow down, not in his pickup, not with a gun - and certainly not with women.|Gary Jones estimates his own age to be about fifteen. Born luckless, he is the son of a hopeless, homeless wandering family, and he's desperate for a way out. When their paths cross, Joe offers him a chance just as his own chances have dwindled to almost nothing. Together they follow a twisting map to redemption - or ruin.
Annotation:
Joe Ransom is middle-aged, drinking too much, living too hard. When 15-year-old Gary Jones comes into his life, Joe is unexpectedly able to offer him a chance--just as his own chances are dwindling. Winner of the 1992 Southern Book Critics Award for Fiction.
Author Bio
Larry Brown
Larry Brown was born in Oxford, Mississippi, and has lived there all his life. For 17 years, he was a firefighter; he was also a Marine in Vietnam from 1971 to 1973. He has taught at various M.F.A. programs throughout the United States. His writing tends to explore the dilemmas of hard-drinking, hard-living Southern men--the proverbial "good ol' boys"--and concentrate on the difficulties of their relationships with women, and with the world in general.
