It was early and Mom and Dad were still asleep. I called softly to Rusty, our crazy-looking, sausagey dachshund, and opened the front door. He came running on his stumpy legs, long tail swishing with joy, and together we ran out into the morning. (from the first line)

From the Publisher:
The jumping place is called the Nail--it's 90 feet from the top of the cliff to the water below. No one in La Paloma has dared jump since that terrible accident 10 years ago--until Scooter tells everyone he will jump. Dru and Mike try desperately to stop the dangerous activities before they lead to another tragedy. ALA Recommended Book for the Reluctant Young Reader.
Seventeen-year-old Dru and her friends take part in the local stunt of leaping from a cliff known as the Nail into the ocean 90 feet below. In the past many have died during this act, but those who survived became legends among their peers. When Dru's emotionally fragile friend Elisa is pressured into jumping by her boastful boyfriend, she survives the leap but not the aftermath. Will Dru be pressured into risking her life by jumping the Nail?
