The week of her tenth birthday, Alice and her parents go to Sanibel Island, Florida, just as they do every year, but this time some of the people who are always there are missing and some new people have come. This unsettles Alice, who wants things to be exactly the same as they alway have been.
Annotation:
Each year, 9-year-old Alice Rice goes to Sanibel Island in Florida with her parents. They have important vacation rituals, like who will see the first dolphin and the first pelican. Alice looks forward to the same things every year, their friends, the seashells she'll discover, and the rhythms of the island. But this year, things are a bit different and it's hard for Alice to adjust. Perhaps finding the junonia seashell, an unusual one that she longs for, will make everything fall into place. Thoughtfully written, imbued with the quiet but important routines of childhood, this story will ring true. With the author's lovely line drawings accompanying the story.

Praise

"Very few writers have such a keen understanding of the emotional lives of children; here Henkes is at the top of his game." 05/01/2011
