Customer Reviews of Kingston 16GB DataTraveler 109 USB 2.0 Flash Drive - Black and White
Very Thin Breakable Plastic - I paid $102/26/2013
Overall this is a nice small unit that performs well. HOWEVER, the white piece in the picture will easily crack over very few uses so don't even bother putting it on your key chain or carrying it around. Once it cracks the unit won't secure itself in your USB slot and if you lose the white piece of plastic you'll be out of luck. I wrapped a piece of scoth tape around mine and it is holding fine for now. This little unit is best used as a static device where you can insert it once and leave it. Examples are, Pogoplug (where mine is), Internal USB header (great for backups)for backup, USB port on NAS (network drive), etc... Fix the design and you get 5 stars.
Small but Flimsy8/5/2012
OK, this usb flash drive is TINY. At first I thought it was amazing, but with in a week it was cracked - there is simply not enough plastic surrounding the usb connector. I was able to hold it in place and retrieve my data before returning it. Other than being frail, it performed well transferring large files, but Don't carry it in your pocket! I'm afraid I will lose it's replacement since I can't put it on my keychain, so it's usefullness will be limited for me.
Nice size and price, fragile7/2/2012
This was a good value for the price, very convenient size and it fits on a key chain. The downside, however, is that it is somewhat fragile. Taking it on & off my key chain resulted in the drive breaking in half. It still works and is held together with duct tape. Next, the usb connector is made mostly out of plastic, which of course disintegrated in my pocket. I trimmed off the remaining shards of plastic and so far, it still works. If I personally would not purchase this unit again.
The drive works great, but the housing is cheap. If your are planning to add this to your keychain it will not last long.
Design Fault of the connector6/20/2012
Speed of the drive is good. However, to me it's a design fault in using the thin white plastic housing instead of metal housing like most if not all other USB flash drives. The plastic housing of my flash drive was just broken due to normal worn out after six month's of gentle and not so frequent use. The connector is still working. However, if the housing breaks futher, I'm not sure whether it will still work. For value, it's higher now as when I purchased it, its price was almost 50% higher. However, with the filmsy housing I won't give more stars even with the currently much lower price.
Cheap - Very Breakable Plastic Covering6/4/2012
This drive's performance was fine until the thin white plastic housing broke, leaving the contacts totally open to the environment. Within a week it was dead. I took proper care of the drive - when it broke I could see how terribly flimsy the plastic was. Kingston used to mean quality... I understand that manufacturers sell high end to low end items, but the lack of protection for this particular drive is beyond cheap. It was built to break.
Awesome especially for the price!5/29/2012
This is a definite buy! The only hassle is to make sure you cancel (if you don't want it as I did not) the Online Backup software from Total Defense that comes with it (trial version 6 mo.) For those that want to know, the URL to submit a cancellation of your trial and to ensure you do not get billed is: https://home3.ca.com/ContinuousProtection/ContinuousProtectionCancels.aspx Enjoy! Otherwise this is a great product! Only drawback (but you can't complain because of the price!!!) is that it is not USB3 compatible. So the speed isn't extreme...just normal. Mine has been beat around, on my keychain, many times and works like a charm. I would definitely buy this again if only to have another one laying around!
Way too small5/29/2012
Wow, technology sure is blasting off. This thumb drive is as advertised, very close to the 16gb claim, but it is very, very small. Haven't had any problems with it so far (2 months), and don't foresee any if I don't lose it. I would prefer a case over the data end so crap doesn't get into it, but good buy for the $$.
Small but poweful5/25/2012
USB drive gets smaller and smaller in size, but bigger and bigger in capacity. Now you can get 64gig in the size of your thumb finger nail. For most of the people, 16gig should be sufficient. And cost wise, it is the cheapest per gig. This Kingston 16gig USB drive is the cheapest among all brands with this size and capacity, why not take it
It is small but very weak. I bought this drive in November 2011, and it is broken now. Fortunately, I am still under the one year warranty, so I called Kingston to get it replaced. If you need a small, compact, but strong flash drive, try Kingston's Data Traveler SE9, it is the same size of this one, but made of metal.
Relatively quick storage in a tiny sized drive5/16/2012
I've copied plenty of files to and from this drive without issue and it's definitely one of the better usb drives I've had. It came in simple packaging that wasn't a wasteful 2 lbs of plastic for a little 50g usb drive... I appreciate that. My only concern with the drive so far is that the ring on the one end might break if you actually put it on a keyring with anything else. The plastic seems rigid enough to last in normal use, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with it on a key change. Also if you were going to use it on a key change there is nothing protecting the usb headers from getting damaged or dirty since there is no cap or cover that comes with the drive.
small and sleep5/4/2012
working fine and lookikng cool but i have afeeling like it has to be used very carefully, feels like it can broken if you hardly put it in USB
The new 16GB flash drive from Kingston is awesome. It looks great. It responses fast. and has plenty of space (14.2 GB actually) for this size. I am very happy with this product till now. However, the product seems not to be very durable because of the plastic. Hence, extra care should be given while using this flash drive.
It has everything that I was looking for on a flash drive. Pros: 1. Protective cover that can never be lost (rotates around the whole drive). 2. Little loop so that it can be attached to a key chain (lost a bunch of drives already). I love this product.
Save your money...4/24/2012
While it works, the plastic is very brittle. The end you plug into the USB port breaks in less than 20 uses. All of my other devices have a metal band surrounding the USB connector, but not this thing. It is also very tiny and easy to lose.
a great flash drive at low price4/19/2012
This flash drive is a handy size for taking along in your pocket or handbag. Good quality and long-lasting. I use and re-use.... The only danger is losing it due to small size. I typically put these small ones on a key chain or attach to something bigger for transport and travel. I like to keep these at work, home, near every computer.
Works for me4/9/2012
I'm not sure what the other people are complaining about with this flash drive. It's small and compact. It works great for me. I have yet to face any issues with the flash drive at all. USB connection has been great. I love the portability of it; it can be stored very easily. It just might be easy to lose because of the size.
Should be listed as 14.2 gb Data Traveler :(3/17/2012
The size is alarmingly small - I was sure I had been mailed an empty envelope - but it was in there! Cost - 5 stars (and I paid $2 more) Ease of use - 5 stars Performance - 5 stars Overall Satisfaction? How do you rate a 16gb drive that is only 14.2 gb? I would have understood if it had been missing 500mb - but almost a full 2 gb is not there! Like buying a gallon of milk and getting home with only 3 quarts :( Kingston - you blew it. Buy.com - you should have checked this first. Still a great deal - but beware - it isn't a 16 gb drive :(
Broken within a week3/5/2012
The white plastic is super thin. I only used it three times before the plastic cracked.
Weak, but usable2/22/2012
don't bother using the loop to attach it to anything... the USB connection isn't very stable, so it loses contact easily, and this seems to be worse with anything attached. It's cheap. You get what you pay for.
Not Acutally 16GB2/17/2012
Purchased 2 of these. This device is actually only 14.2 GB not 16 GB. Very tight fit on USB port. This device is difficult to plug and unplug. Can cause damage to USB port if not very careful.
