Telling the Department's Story

by Pam on 8/22/2010

The long history of a Massachusetts community's fire department gets a thorough recounting in "Leominster Firefighting," another of the many local histories told by Arcadia Publishing. Firefighter Roger LaPointe, the fourth in his family to serve in the department, has amassed dozens of photos, official records and personal stories to tell the history of the department founded in 1820 and still going strong today. His story and photos show how the department was formed, its gradual transition to a permanent, professional operation and the equipment and training firefighters experienced. THere are also stories and photos of parades, large fires the department fought over the years, and the community involvement of firefighters as volunteers and as professionals. Thisi is a particularly well-organized and carefully presented collection of pictures and text, a pleasure for both local Leominster residents and firefighter buffs.

Product Overview

In 1820, a group of Leominster volunteers formed Engine Company No. 1 "in the interests of protecting the rights of the settlers in case of fire." Since then, more than 1,400 individuals have served as firefighters for the citizens of Leominster, each of them leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Leominster Firefighting features images, memorabilia, and photographs from the early days of the hand tubs and horse-drawn hose carts of the 1800s to the 20th century when motorized apparatus arrived. It provides a glimpse into the many traditions that have been passed from one generation to the next and a look into how fire has changed Leominster.
