|This unique volume of 21 recent essays published in "Natural History" magazine consciously formulates a humanistic natural history, telling how humans have learned to study and understand nature, rather than a history of nature itself. 41 illustrations.|
Stephen Jay Gould received his Ph.D. in paleontology from Columbia University and was later appointed Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard University. He served on the advisory boards of the Children's Television Workshop and NOVA, and edited the professional journal Evolution. His popular column in Natural History magazine illustrated the depth and breadth of his scientific knowledge, as well as his witty and graceful writing style. An ardent enemy of pseudoscience, Gould was well known as an articulate spokesperson for evolutionary science. He died at the age of 60 of abdominal mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer.
