From the Publisher:
At the moment, Georges has a lot going on. Dad was laid off so Mom has started working extra shifts at the hospital, and they had to sell their house in Brooklyn and move into an apartment. One good thing about the new building is Safer, an unusual boy who lives on the top floor. He's determined to teach Georges how to be a spy. Their main case: spy on the mysterious Mr. X in the apartment above Georges. As Georges and Safer go deeper into their Mr. X plan, the line between games, lies, and reality begin to blur.
Annotation:
When Georges's family must move to a Brooklyn apartment due to financial problems, the seventh grader tries to make the best of it. He meets an intense, homeschooled boy named Safer whose interest with a creepy upstairs neighbor borders on the obsessive. Still, it's a nice change from school, where Georges's best friend, Jason, has forsaken him for the cool kids, who mercilessly harass him. Loving and funky families, odd and interesting kids, and learning to cope with life's troubles create an engaging read. Those who enjoy E.L. Konigsburg's style will enjoy this sweet, thoughtful coming-of-age middle novel. Rebecca Stead is also the author of the Newbery Medal-winner WHEN YOU REACH ME.

Praise

"Stead's spare and elegant prose, compassionate insight into the lives of young people, wry sense of humor, deft plotting, and ability to represent complex ideas in an accessible and intriguing way make this much more than a mystery-with-a-twist." (starred review) September/October 2012

"It would be unfair to give anything away, but suffice it to say that Georges resolves his various issues in a way that's both ingenious and organic to the story...Original and winning." 06/01/2012

"Chock-full of fascinating characters and intelligent questions, this is as close to perfect as middle-grade novels come." 06/11/2012

"Stead has written a lovely, quiet, and layered novel that explores friendship in all its facets. She particularly examines truths, secrets, deceptions, and imagination and whether these can destroy or ultimately strengthen a friendship." September 2012
