Fascinating!

by Janet on 12/10/2010

I find the premise to be one of the most interesting subject to spawn a tv series in history. It is based on Dr Paul Eckman who spent his extensive career studying body language working independently and with the US government. He has published several books and worked with great minds (ie The Dalai Lama). THe characters are flawed and realistic and the subject matter is constantly changing showing that the science of reading people is applicable to many different forums. There is also a website where the real Dr Eckman will comment on what transpires in each episode and give his feedback as to what is true and what has been exaggerated or condensed for tv. It's intelligent entertainment.

Review They say that the average person tells three lies in every ten minutes of conversation. I'd say it depends entirely on who you are talking to. Still there is no doubt that humans lie, a lot, and this could form a decent premise for a television show. The latest Fox drama is called Lie to Me and a few episodes in I'm still trying to decide whether it's any good or not...The initial attraction was the presence of Tim Roth who plays the star of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman. He is a self trained lie detector, an expert on facial expressions and their hidden meanings. He can determine the truth by watching unconscious body language and remaining vigilant for micro-expressions. The idea is that we all have tells that give away our lies and this concept is beautifully illustrated with the odd piece of celebrity footage woven into the fabric of each episode...The first few episodes have challenged Lightman to solve various cases by watching out for unconscious micro-expressions, the quick tell tale facial expressions which give away our true feelings. This was interesting at first but is starting to become slightly wearing and will no doubt be entirely boring by the end of the 13 episode run. The writing is far too predictable and you'll find yourself guessing the answer in the first few minutes of each episode and then having to wait for the cast to figure it out...Lightman's partner Dr. Gillian Foster played by Kelli Williams is like the straight man for his deadpan humour. Monica Raymund plays the rookie member of the team with natural ability and a big chip on her shoulder and Brendan Hines rounds things off as the sardonic, overly honest Eli Loker. The Loker character is the funniest because he has a habit of saying exactly what is on his mind which allows the writers to throw in some jokes. However if it wasn't for the performance of Tim Roth this would be completely unwatchable.
