Author Info
David Herbert Donald
David Herbert Donald was a renowned historian of the American Civil War and a Lincoln scholar of note. He is also the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, one for a highly regarded biography of the novelist Thomas Wolfe called LOOK HOMEWARD. The son of a farmer and a teacher, Donald grew up in Mississippi, got his master's at the University of Illinois, and has taught at several ivy league schools, including Columbia and Harvard. His biography LINCOLN is generally regarded as an essential Lincoln book.
Praise
"I always thought a Lincoln biography was too formidable a task for me, but after my second Pulitzer, I thought, 'If there are enough people out there who have twice thought I'm a good biographer, I'll try it.'"
"In most writing about Lincoln, the resonance is piped in from outside, the milieu from which he sprang, the social and political context in which he acted, his changing image, his enduring influence. In Donald's biography, the resonance emanates from Lincoln himself, who left a powerful impression on everyone who ever met him. Without novelizing, Donald re-creates what it must have been like to be in Lincoln's presence--and even in his head."
From the Publisher
Editors Note The phenomenal national bestseller that is "the Lincoln biography for this generation" (Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.)--now in paperback. Drawing on resources not available until recently--including Lincoln's personal papers, archives, and newspaper reports--two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Herbert Donald presents a masterful account of Lincoln's rise to the presidency and the political and personal challenges he faced while in office.
