Through his own poetry, 11-year-old Lonnie Collins shares his heartbreak over his late parents and his love for his younger sister Lili, separated from him when they were placed in foster care. A 2003 National Book Award Finalist and a Coretta Scott King Honor Book.
Annotation:
It's been four years since 11-year-old Lonnie's parents where killed in a fire and he still misses them desperately. Living in a foster home and separated from his younger sister Lili, Lonnie hopes that his newest foster mother, Miss Edna, will officially take him into her family. This story, which explores Lonnie's life both at home and at school, is told entirely via Lonnie's poetry.
Author Bio
Jacqueline Woodson
Though she started her working life at the tender age of two as an Ebony magazine model for Alaga syrup, Jacqueline Woodson's first love was always writing. Growing up in North Carolina and Brooklyn, Woodson worked as a drama therapist for teens in need, before taking up writing full-time. She's the author of over 20 books for children of all ages, from picture books to young adult titles, including SHOW WAY and FEATHERS.

Praise

Kirkus Reviews
"As in her prose novels, Woodson's created a character whose presence you can feel like they were sitting next to you....Don't let anyone miss this." 11/15/2002

Publishers Weekly
"Woodson, through Lonnie, creates (much as Sharon Creech did with the boy narrator in LOVE THAT DOG) a contagious appreciation for poetry while using the genre as a cathartic means for expressing the young poet's own grief." 11/25/2002
