Waht Is Tactics?
While The Lord of the Rings: Tactics, may be the first handheld, tactical role-playing game (RPG) to be set in Middle-earth, it's not the first Tactics game of its kind. Tactical RPGs have been around since the early '90s and have enjoyed a high level of success in Japan.
What defines a Tactical RPG is its unique, turn-based strategic gameplay, performed on an isometric grid. In a tactical RPG, you typically control a party of eight to ten characters and battle a similar number of human- or computer-controlled enemies. The chessboard-like gameplay offers a lot of maneuverability; you can attack, counter-attack, change positions, or even exploit terrain to your advantage in the course of one turn. In many respects, tactical RPGs can be considered a fusion of traditional RPGs with turn-based strategy.
In The Lord of the Rings: Tactics, the action is made more gripping due to the evolutionary ability to take turns simultaneously. In this way, you can move every character you control during each turn, and what's more, you can do it without waiting for your opponent to make his or her move. This means you spend more time in gameplay and less time waiting, opening a whole new level of strategic warfare.
The Lord of the Rings: Tactics employs assets from both the acclaimed film trilogy and J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved fiction to bring the world of handheld tactical RPG gaming to the world of Middle-earth. Return to Middle-earth and experience new strategic gameplay only to be found in The Lord of the Rings: Tactics, exclusively on the PlayStation Portable.
