Loved this film.

I was born in Cuba, so I know for a fact that this film is very realistic. I also know that this movie has been banned in some South American countries because it portrays "Che Guevara", one of Castro's top guys, as a cruel and blood thirsty murderer. This again is true. His face has been popping all over; in t-shirts, tattos, etc. And the sad thing is, the people who idiolize him don't know much about what he did in Cuba. Even Castro said that he was ruthless. He killed for the sake of killing. This is a gorgeous film that should be seen.

Historical fiction gets history right!

by Espinosa on 1/17/2009

Garcia did a beautiful job of pragmatically depicting pre-Castro Cuba as a Latin American bastion for the arts and economic progress, but he doesn't down-play the political turmoil inherent throughout the region. Given Hollywood's proclivity to glorify Che, its refreshing to see a movie that actually portray him as the amoralistic assassin that he was. No wonder Garcia had to make this as an indie. Watch "The Lost City" before you see the two part Che biopic that's cominng out later this year. Contrary to the media wants you to believe, Che's legacy is one of murder and destruction, not reform. I cannot fathom an American who would not be offended by a man reknowned for the statement "Execute him today, we'll try him tomorrow." In the words of Gloria Estefan: Que pronto regrese tu estrella, mi Cubita linnda, mi Cubita bella.

Review Andy Garcia's "The Lost City" feels like the distillation of countless conversations and family legends, rehearsed from time immemorial by Cubans who fled their homeland and sought to re-create it in their memories...I enjoyed Murray and his scenes, but the character doesn't fit with the rest of the film. Fico Fellove is not a particularly witty or sunny character and does not suffer fools gladly...There is romance and some action, but it is not a romance or an adventure film; it is a personal version of what happened in Cuba and what it felt like at the time.

Review To leave or not to leave weighs heavy on the denizens of "The Lost City," actor-director Andy Garcia's melancholic ode to his native Cuba during the revolutionary late-1950s. On and off drawing boards for nearly two decades, this longtime dream project for Garcia and late novelist-critic Guillermo Cabrera Infante (who died in February) emerges as a handsomely produced, deeply passionate, but seriously flawed historical epic whose reach far exceeds its grasp. Somewhere inside this overlong, sometimes engaging, often tedious affair, there may be a solid, 100-minute movie...
