Muze PNote Equal parts doo wop, vocal jazz, and Norman Rockwell-era Americana, Love to Live is a product of another time, an album that wouldn't seem out of place on the phonograph of some postwar American living room. It's a clever premise, really -- assemble three L.A.-based songbirds into one girl group, give them a copy of the Andrews Sisters' 50th Anniversary Collection, and see what happens -- and the gamble pleasantly works, resulting in a neo-nostalgia album that places the Living Sisters alongside a number of other vintage-minded groups. Like She & Him, the Living Sisters devote most of their time to an amalgam of retro sounds and forgotten genres, infusing a little contemporary appeal into the mix but always remaining focused on the past, not the present. And like most mid-century girl groups, they all have specific roles to play: Inara George is the unspoken leader, Eleni Mandell is the brainy workhorse (of the album's eight original tunes, four are her own), and Becky Stark is the cute ing?nue, the Baby Spice of the boomer generation. All three have demonstrated their ability to sing with other groups, and the close harmonies on Love to Live are virtually flawless, particularly on album highlights like "Don't Let the Sun Go Down" and "Double Knots." ~ Andrew Leahey

Producer: The Living Sisters; Sheldon Gomberg

Artist Overview

The Living Sisters include Inara George, Becky Stark, and Eleni Mandell, three Los Angeles-based songwriters who began singing together in 2006. All three had previously pursued different projects; George sang retro pop songs with the Bird and the Bee, Stark recorded chamber folk music with Lavender Diamond, and Mandell maintained a healthy solo career. A shared interest in vocal jazz, gospel, doo wop, and country harmonies eventually brought the three together, and by 2009 they had squared away enough free time to begin recording an album with co-producer Sheldon Gomberg. The resulting Love to Live was released by Vanguard Records in March 2010. ~ Andrew Leahey

Professional Reviews

Spin - "Complete with whistling, Mandell's sleepy 'Ferris Wheel' seems to be a straightforward tale of good times, but this trio never stays in an obvious comfort zone for long."

Mojo (Publisher)
(p.99)
- 3 stars out of 5 -- "Together, they make a sound that harks back to the innocence of the '50s vocal groups."

Uncut (magazine)
(p.97)
- 4 stars out of 5 -- "'You Make Me Blue' is a nod to classic doo wop but the prevailing mood is '60s pop crossed with Louvin Brothers vocalising."
