For some time now, Apple's stand-alone keyboards are flimsy, have noisy, unresponsive keys, unlike vintage Apple Keyboards of the past. It's no wonder a lot of Mac users look to third party keyboards.

Well, if you like a well-designed keyboard, and like the feel of Apple Powerbook keyboards, this keyboard is for you! (Apple Powerbook keyboards are soft to the touch, and are very responsive, because of the way the keys are designed.) This keyboard is not only well packaged - it's well designed.

The construction quality of the iceKEY keyboard surpasses Apple's. One sign of the shoddy construction of Apple's keyboards is that when you pick one up, the thin plastic chassis bends under the weight, usually making creaking sounds. The iceKEY, on the other hand, has a sturdy chassis that doesn't bend or creak when you pick it up. The iceKEY USB ports are also more sturdy than Apple's (I suspect they will last longer as a result). Every part of this keyboard appears to be well made.

The scissor-key switches in the iceKEY keyboard make it one of the more responsive keyboards I have ever used. The keys have a soft touch, are very quiet, and are extremely responsive! I find I am able to type much faster on this keyboard, because my fingers don't have to push as hard.

The only drawback to using this keyboard (and this actually goes for *any* non-Apple keyboard), is that you must install the third-party software in order for the volume and eject keys to function. I was a little wary of installing Macally's software, because they shipped a beta version of the software with the keyboard, and VersionTracker & MacUpdate have mixed reviews about the beta software. Althought I have not personally encountered them, there are apparantly some stability issues with the software. I have encounted zero problems with the software in two weeks off use - once installed, it just works (with Mac OS 10.3.7 on a dual 2ghz G5).

The bottom line is this keyboard blends quality consruction with soft-touch key responsiveness. It's fantastic! Definitely recommended if you are looking for a replacement keyboard for your Macintosh!

Best Keyboard, Reliability is an issue

on 3/7/2006

This is by far the best feeling and looking keyboard on the market today. However, I'm on my third already, because on the first, the Ctrl keys gave out and second just stopped working altogether. It's recognized as a USB device but not the keyboard. If they would last longer, they would be the only keyboards I'd ever use!
