Review Max Baer was cast as hick millionaire simpleton Jethro Bodine in The Beverly Hillbillies in 1962...Unfortunately, after the series ended, Baer found his acting career on the skids -- his persona permanently etched in the minds of millions as goofy Jethro. Refusing to simply slink off into obscurity, Baer raised $110,000 and produced, co-wrote and co-starred in the drive-in classic Macon County Line. The film would go on to make a staggering $35 million at the box office in 1974...The key to the film's initial success was a breezy but haunting feel that slowly built suspense to an extremely tense, shattering conclusion -- the entire affair steeped in an amazing sense of reality for films of its type and of its era. Years later, the film doesn't have the same edge it once did, but it's still an entertaining, suspenseful ride worth taking. Particularly of note here are a smart script by Baer and director Richard Compton, and top-drawer acting by the entire cast (including a 12-year-old Leif Garrett in a pivotal role as the sheriff's son). Rightfully, Macon would forever abolish Baer's image as lug-head Jethro. Take a look at the scene in which he first starts an inquisitive conversation with the Dixon brothers as they wait for their car to be fixed. Based on his Hillbillies work, few could have imagined that the actor was capable of such character depth and intensity.

Bill Warren, ...a remarkably smart movie, which is true of more drive-in classics than most people are aware.
