Author Bio
Ludwig Bemelmans
Born in Austria, Ludwig Bemelmans became a naturalized American citizen in 1918. He is best known for his 1939 book MADELINE and its many sequels. The character of Madeline was inspired by Bemelmans's wife, Madeline Freund, as well as his mother's stories of growing up in Bavaria. MADELINE'S RESCUE won the Caldecott Medal in 1953. Ludwig Bemelmans wrote more than 15 books for children and over 20 books for adults. He and his wife had one child, a daughter named Barbara.
