Author Bio
Paul Johnson
Paul Bade Johnson grew up in Northwestern England, attending a Catholic school where he studied classical languages and played a number of sports. He received his B.A. in history from Magdalen College, Oxford University, before embarking on a career as a journalist and freelance writer. Johnson held a number of editorial posts at the leftist New Statesman (London) from 1955 to 1970. He has contributed numerous essays, columns, and book reviews to such publications as the National Review, the New Republic, The American Spectator, the Spectator, and Commentary. Previously active in Britain's Labour Party, Johnson shifted his loyalties to the Conservatives in a bold move in 1977. He has written epic histories of the modern world, of Christianity and Judaism, profiles of British cathedrals and castles, biographies, and his journalistic pieces have touched on politics, the media, popular culture, and more. He has written or edited over three dozen books, including the bestselling MODERN TIMES: The World from the Twenties to the Nineties (1983).
