Author Bio
Andrea Davis Pinkney
In addition to writing books for children, Andrea Davis Pinkney is also a successful book editor who has worked with such illustrious authors as Toni Morrison and Julius Lester. A graduate of Syracuse University, Pinkney began her career in publishing as a magazine editor. Later, as a book editor, Pinkney worked for such respected publishing houses as Scholastic and Simon & Schuster. In 1988 Pinkney was named Senior Editor of Jump at the Sun Books, a division of Hyperion Publishing which creates books that celebrate the black cultural experience. As a writer, Pinkney herself specializes in books that celebrate black culture, most specifically with her series of picture book biographies that profile such famous people of color as choreographer Alvin Ailey, scientist Benjamin Bannaker, and rodeo star Bill Pickett. Andrea Davis Pinkney has said that her 1996 young adult novel, HOLD FAST TO DREAMS is based on her own teenage years.

"[T]he Pinkneys present important figures and a pivotal moment during the Civil Rights Movement in a fresh and visually compelling manner... Overlaid with ribbons of key words and rounded lines suggesting ripples from the characters' auras, the pictures provide emotional content for the author's smart and stylized descriptions."
