Cees Nooteboom
Born in the Hague in 1933, Dutch writer Cees Nooteboom published two novels while still in his 20s, then devoted himself to travel-writing for nearly two decades before returning to fiction in the 1980s. Critically acclaimed and well-known in Holland and Germany, Nooteboom has never received the attention he deserves in the United States, though he is highly regarded in literary circles. His novels often involve travelers in foreign countries and deal thoughtfully with the mysteries of the art-making process and its relation to the physical and spiritual world. On multiple occasions he has been considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
