Editor's Note
This claymation wonder made a splash at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. The surprising friendship between a young Australian girl named Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) and an aging New Yorker named Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman) lies at the heart of this sweet comedy. Though Mary and Max have never met, they communicate via letter, becoming close companions though they are separated by thousands of miles. Barry Humphries provides narration, while Eric Bana also supplies his voice.

Professional Reviews

Hollywood Reporter
"The mind's imagery comes alive onscreen in a way life-action could never do. The whole film represents an astonishing feat..." 01/16/2009

Los Angeles Times
"[R]emarkable and poignant....MARY AND MAX's jauntiness fades into a sadness that culminates on a note of self-acceptance -- and a great gratitude for the sustaining, redemptive power of friendship." 09/25/2009

Sight and Sound
"Elliot draws comedy from grimness in the same way that Solondz does....Even at its darkest moments his film is suffused with a mordant comedy." 11/01/2010

Empire
4 stars out of 5 -- "Tackling such un-animation topics as loneliness, body image, alcoholism, suicide and Asperger's syndrome, it's quirky, compassionate and slightly seedily sweet." 10/22/2010

Total Film
4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a platform for deliciously dark wit, beautifully crafted 'toonery and fine voice work, particularly from Philip Seymour Hoffman..." 10/19/2010

Uncut
3 stars out of 5 -- "Hoffman's work is sublime." 03/01/2011
