Great triple head video card, but loud fan

by Phil on 10/13/2006

I just set up a triple-head (3 monitor) video display system. The Matrox P750 was one of the few cards that supports 3 outputs and has both analog and digital (DVI) outputs. So far, works great -- the video is sharp and the drivers seem happy and stable. Only two complaints: (1) the graphics chip has a heatsink with an integrated fan that is really loud; since I'm trying to use this for a quiet office PC, this was irritating. (2) when you're running with three heads, you can only run 1 display in DVI mode -- the other two have to be analog connections. I get the sense that this is more a limitation of the cabling setup they have, though I don't know this for certain. Oh, and I guess (3), it's kind of expensive. But overall, it does the job!

This multi-monitor display interface is intended for professional/scientific uses where image quality is of utmost importance. It allows flexible combinations of DVI and analog monitors (up to three of 'em!)and is compatible with AGP versions back to 2x, hence can be installed in older legacy computers. It has a nice "PowerDesk" interface that allows one to change modes and adjust settings quite readily. On the negative side, it has rather limited memory (64k), it is expensive, and it can be tricky to set up. Originally I had this unit driving two CRT analog monitors, which it did without complaint. However, when I recently upgraded with two 19" LCD displays, I experienced very frustrating intermittant failures of the system to boot up the video when the computer was turned on. Often the computer had to be rebooted several times until the video signal was acquired by one or both of the monitors. It turned out that the problem was that the Matrox DVI signal was not being recognized by the monitors, which are capable of automatically deciding whether they are attached to an analog or digital (DVI)adaptor. The solution was simple, namely the monitors had to be set from the default "auto" signal recognition to DVI. In summary, this is a specialized adaptor for rendering outstanding static scientific and medical images. It should not be considered for high speed gaming or casual business or home use.
