Becoming Less Thrilled with McAfee
I've used McAfee ViruScan in one incarnation or other for many years and I'm beginning to re-evaluate it. Its performance, as I see it, is adequate, but the reason I chose McAfee over Norton, for example, was that it was virtually invisible. It worked in the background and didn't particularly slow down or otherwise impede the system's performance. That no longer appears to be true. It's constantly throwing pop-ups at me, asking me for permission to let the computer do things I've told it to do, and generally gumming up my workflow. I expect it will smooth out after a few weeks, but after a few months it will be time for an upgrade and -- by the way -- another involved load of paperwork for a rebate on the next iteration. I'm not sure I've ever actually received one of McAfee's rebates; there's so much crap to jam into an envelope, some of which takes some real digging many months after you may have discarded it, that it's hardly worth it. McAfee appears to have evolved into the product I always objected to when evaluating its competitors. I think I'm going to go shopping for the next virus software I install.
