Review About the only thing that Meet Dave has going for it is a very brief cameo by Jake Shears, the lead singer of the Scissor Sisters. The cameo occurs about five minutes into the movie and if you blink, you'll miss him. It's all downhill from there, as Meet Dave is easily the worst movie of the summer and a new low for Eddie Murphy. (Who knew that was even possible after Norbit?)...Murphy plays Dave (duh), an extraterrestrial that crashes on to Liberty Island one summer. He looks human, but he's really a robot that houses a bunch of human-like aliens that control the robot. (Got all of that?) After arriving in New York, director Brian Robbins pushes Murphy through the requisite fish-out-of-water sequence that has Dave exploring the city. The scene evokes memories of similar sequences in far superior films such as Enchanted and Borat, and all the scene does is make one wish he/she was watching one of those movies instead. After wandering through Times Square, he's run over by a single mom in an SUV (Elizabeth Banks) and before you can say "Cliche!" the pair are falling in love. Throw in a subplot about the environment and some poop jokes, and that's Meet Dave for ya...Running a very long 90 minutes, Meet Dave is family-friendly in the sense that the flick is rated PG. But the limp script, cheap-looking special effects, and the lackluster performances of the cast don't make this a hit for families--or anyone else, for that matter.

Review Back in the 1980s, it wasn't uncommon to hear Eddie Murphy referred to as a "comic genius." 20 years later, the man who once made a concert film called Raw has become a purveyor of PG-rated pabulum. At one point, Murphy could deliver while collecting a big paycheck. These days, he seems to have given up on the former in the service of the latter. Meet Dave, Murphy's latest lackluster "family comedy," is a step up from Norbit, but that's damning with faint praise. (Meet Dave is helmed by Norbit's director, Brian Robbins - not a good sign.) After the early 2007 misfire, which some pundits believe cost Murphy an Oscar, there's nowhere to go but up. With Meet Dave, that trajectory is achieved but it doesn't go far enough to avoid disappointment...This is not Murphy's first fish-out-of-water comedy, but it's vastly inferior to his previous such endeavor, 1988's Coming to America. Murphy's re-visit to the genre two decades later is considerably less fresh and funny, although the PG rating may have something to do with that. Coming to America was unapologetically raunchy; Meet Dave is neutered. Sex jokes have been replaced by quips about Google, Yahoo, and Old Navy. Rather than making Meet Dave seem new and relevant, they merely highlight how tired this entire production is. This is made-for-TV material dressed up by Eddie Murphy's participation into a theatrical release.

Quotes
Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer ...proves once again that Murphy can do anything - even a PG comedy in which he isn't a donkey.
Joe Leydon, Variety ...a lightly amusing and surprisingly sweet Fox release.
Ken Fox, TV Guide ...Eddie Murphy's least-painful comedy in years has a certain peculiar charm.
Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly ...this unfairly maligned sci-fi comedy testifies that Eddie Murphy still has the gift of surprise.
Stephen Cole, The Globe and Mail ...it's kind of sweet, innocent almost -- kid-friendly in the best sense.
