Product Overview

On her second album, Nashville starlet Julie Roberts writes or co-writes nearly half the songs, making Men And Mascara something far different from the usual cookie-cutter Music Row product. Much like Shelby Lynne's I Am Shelby Lynne, Men And Mascara has the feel of autobiography; even those songs that don't have Roberts's byline fit into a loose narrative of broken hearts and late, lonely nights. The songs detail a string of bad relationships typified by the chorus of the title track and first single: "Men and mascara always run." Musically, the album shows an affinity with both the new honky-tonk spirit embodied by Gretchen Wilson and the folkie simplicity of Jo Dee Messina, while Roberts sings wistfully over even the most roadhouse-ready tunes.

Artist Bio
February 1979, Lancaster, South Carolina, USA. Country singer Roberts began performing as a child, touring around the southern states as part of a vocal group with her mother and aunt. After high school she ended up at Belmont University in Nashville where she began playing with a small combo on the local bar circuit. To pay the wages she took an office position with Mercury Nashville, ending up as assistant to label head Luke Lewis. Her demo tape made its way to Mercury via a circuitous route and, to his great surprise, Lewis learned that the artist he was interested in signing was actually his assistant. Roberts duly signed a recording contract with Mercury in 2003 and quit her day job. Several of the songs on her demo made it onto her debut album, although none of Roberts' original compositions made the cut. Guest performers at the recording sessions included Vince Gill, Delbert McClinton and Wes Hightower. The self-titled collection, released in summer 2004, provided ample evidence of Roberts' affection for both traditional country and blue-eyed soul music. The album received positive reviews while its commercial status was boosted by the success of the single, "Break Down Here".
