You want the truth from me? It's a subjective thing, truth, you know, and you could easily get all the damning evidence you need from the datafeed transcripts. Oh, but you wouldn't understand my MOTIVE, would you? I see the point. (from the first line)
In the twenty-fourth century, Dr. Zeus Incorporated discovered the secret of time travel, but only how to move backward. Now cyborg operatives are enduring the epochs of Earth's history -- immortals dedicated to the company's great goal: "to make money and improve the lot of humankind".

After centuries of disappointments -- including the death of her lover -- the Botanist Mendoza is stranded at a remote stagecoach inn in the unspoiled desert destined to be renamed Los Angeles. Back East, a Civil War is raging. But in Cahuenga Pass, there is little for Mendoza and her fellow operatives to do. Until one day the door swings open and in walks the doppelganger of Mendoza's love. And suddenly the Botanist's life is careening toward disaster . . . again.

From the Publisher:
This is the third novel in what has become one of the most popular series in contemporary SF, now back in print from Tor. In the 24th century, the Company preserves works of art and extinct forms of life, for profit, of course. It recruits orphans from the past, renders them all but immortal, and trains them to serve the Company, Dr. Zeus. One of these is Mendoza the botanist. The death of her lover has been followed by centuries of heartbreak. She spends a period of time in early twentieth century Hollywood in the days of D.W. Griffith, and then Mendoza is in the midst of the Civil War, and runs into a man that looks disturbingly similar to her lost love. She is about to find love again, and be in more trouble than she could ever have imagined.
Annotation:
Still tormented by the loss of her beloved Nicholas, now dead for several hundred years, Mendoza is sent to California in 1865. As always, her mission is to reclaim plant species that have long been extinct in the future of the 2300s, the time when the Company was founded (or so she thinks). As the plants dry up and her mood grows more desperate, Mendoza learns some dangerous things about the Company--and about the man she once loved. This is the third novel in the Company series.
