Mr. and Mrs. Watson have a pig named Mercy. Each night, they sing Mercy to sleep. (from the first line)
Annotation:
Delicious, comforting butter toast is what motivates "porcine wonder" Mercy Watson at all times, whether she's awake or dreaming or having an emergency. In this charming, nostalgic chapter book, the plump, pink pig lives with the doting Mr. and Mrs. Watson, who cherish her, despite the protests of their cantankerous neighbor, Eugenia Lincoln. One night, during a particularly hilarious catastrophe, though Mercy heads off in search of toast, she inadvertently saves the day. With lush, brightly colored gouache paintings. By an author with many awards under her belt, including the Newbery Medal winner THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX and BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, a Newbery Honor Book.
Author Bio
Kate Dicamillo
Children's book author Kate DiCamillo worked for a book distributor before convincing a Candlewick sales representative to show an editor a draft of BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE. She went on to receive a 2001 Newbery Honor, and the book was made into a film in 2005. DiCamillo has been continuously and impressively successful, winning the 2004 Newbery Medal for THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX, and writing numerous well-received books, including THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE and the delightful Mercy Watson early reading series.

Praise

Publishers Weekly
"Newbery Medalist DiCamillo (THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX) once again displays her versatility with this jaunty debut to an early chapter book series." 07/20/2005
