Matty was impatient to have the supper preparations over and done with. He wanted to cook, eat, and be gone. (from the first line)
Knowing that the Village will soon be closed to all outsiders, Matty must make the trek through the dangerous Forest to find Seers daughter and convince her to return with him before it is too late and he loses her forever. *Author: Lowry, Lois *Publication Date: 2004/04/26 *Number of Pages: 176 *Binding Type: Hardbound *Grade Level: 7-9 *Language: English *Depth: 0.75 *Width: 6.00 *Height: 8.75
From the Publisher:
Strange changes are taking place in Village. Once a utopian community that prided itself on its welcome to new strangers, Village will soon be closed to all outsiders. As one of the few people able to travel through the dangerous Forest, Matty must deliver the message of Village’s closing and try to convince Seer’s daughter to return with him before it’s too late. But Forest has become hostile to Matty as well, and he must risk everything to fight his way through it, armed only with an emerging power he cannot yet explain or understand.
Annotation:
This companion to THE GIVER and GATHERING BLUE focuses on Matty, a formerly wild young boy who has forged a new life for himself in the community known as Village. Now living with Kira's blind father, who is known as Seer, Matty is proud to live in Village, a place where strangers have always been welcomed, and where people treat each other with respect and kindness. Recently, though, something dark and evil has permeated Village: the people are becoming harsh and unforgiving and there is even a movement afoot to stop welcoming strangers into Village's society. Under the direction of Leader, Matty travels through Forest to deliver the news about Village--and to bring Kira to her father before she, an outsider, is permanently shut out of Village. As Matty makes the journey through Forest, he discovers that like Village, Forest is changing, and it too, seems bent on keeping strangers, and perhaps even Matty himself, away from Village forever. Matty, however, has recently discovered that he has a powerful and mysterious gift--but will he realize the true meaning and value of this gift in enough time to use it properly?
Author Bio
Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry has tremendous range as a writer. She is well known for her humorous series of books about Anastasia Krupnik and her younger brother, Sam, but has also written about more serious topics, such as the Holocaust. As a result of her father's career as a U.S. Army dentist, Lois was born in Hawaii and attended junior high school in Japan. She attended Brown University but left school to get married and have children and, as a matter of fact, she had four before her 25th birthday. She eventually returned to school and graduated from the University of Maine. Her first book, A SUMMER TO DIE, was published in 1977. She won the Newbery Medal in 1990 for NUMBER THE STARS and again in 1994 for THE GIVER. A woman of many talents, Lowry's work as a photographer has appeared on the cover of some of her books. She also appeared on the television quiz show Jeopardy!

Praise

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Lowry's writing, especially the domestic details and the dialogue, is simple and comfortable, while her story has enough mystery and action to carry the slower and more touching moments." - Krista Hutley June 2004
