The Film that Takes You into the Heart of the Beast.
Sam dunn is a 30-year old anthropologist who wrote his graduate thesis on the plight of guatemalan refugees. Recenly he has decided to study the plight of a different culture, one he has been a part of since he was a 12-year old: the culture of heavy metal.

"Superbly crafted documentary is strong enough to make believers out of non-metalheads...  Ken Eisner, Variety
"...the film is a carefully organized and thoughtful argument for the merits of metal.  Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times
"It'll make you want to dig out your Whitesnake T-shirt.  Kyle Smith, New York Post
"...stacked teased-hair high with wicked performance footage.  Scott Foundas, L.A. Weekly

Editor's Note
Professional anthropologist and rabid heavy-metal fan Sam Dunn devoted himself to making the most complete portrait of the heavy metal scene every created; the result, METAL, A HEADBANGER'S JOURNEY, is a resounding success. Mixing his academic eye with his personal love for the genre, Dunn travels from the clubs of Sunset Boulevard to the dark forests of Norway in an attempt to understand the ongoing phenomenon of metal music. He tackles subjects of sexuality, religion, violence, and death, and talks to some of the superstars of the metal world, including Tony Iomii of Black Sabbath, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Lemmy of Motorhead, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, and the members of Slipknot and Cannibal Corpse (whose albums have been banned in Australia). The highly engaging film provides fascinating history and insight for viewers unfamiliar with metal music while simultaneously offering up essential viewing for metalhead fanatics.

Chicago Tribune 8 of 10
It's a sharp contrast to the American softies, who, while they try to out-evil each other on the billboard charts, are really just a bunch of soft-spoken, witty, former outsiders--the kind of guys to take home to mom, if only they didn't look like that.

So maybe Dunn's right. Maybe this whole metal scene is misunderstood. Discussing their controversial album, "God Hates Us All," members of the band Slayer admit, "He doesn't really hate us. It's just a great [bleeping] album title." - Allison Benedikt

Austin Chronicle 9 of 10
Dunn, a metalhead since the age of 13 who currently holds an advanced degree in anthropology, makes for an immediately ingratiating host, traversing the globe in search of answers like some scrawny, long-haired Indiana Jones. What he discovers will likely come as no surprise to headbangers - or punks, for that matter - but the mission of this smart and revelatory doc is broader than simple reportage: He wants the uninitiated to understand what all the fuss is about, too. And like the anthropologist he is, he succeeds in spades (and, yes, aces as well). - Marc Savlov
